Knitting Project Classes

Thursdays from 4-7pm, you can pop in anytime and learn a new skill to add to your personal toolbox.

1 class - Learn to cast-on & knit

3 class series - Learn to cast-on, knit purl, bind-off and weave-in.

You or a small group can sign up to learn how to knit and purl.  Left-handed?  Let us show you techniques that use your dominant right-brain.

Materials needed:  

• 1 skein of light-colored worsted, aran, or bulky yarn.

Looking for crisp designs and a clear understanding of yarn dominance, then this is the technique class for you.  

What will you learn?

• Identifying foreground and background colors
• How to hold your yarns to ensure crisp patterns no matter what style you knit in
• How to catch long floats

Supplies Needed:

• 2 small skeins of worsted or aran weight yarn  1 light 1  dark 
• Appropriate size circular needles for yarn weight
• Knitter's toolbox

• Cast on 80 stitches, join in the rand knit 5 rows

Mistakes are a part of knitting, but you can learn how to fix them.  

What will you learn?

• Learn to read your knitting
• Fix mistakes in stockinette stitch, ribbing and cable patterns

Knit 3 swatches in light colored worsted weight yarn casting on 50 stitches and knitting for 5" in Stockinette (1 knit row 1 purl row), Garter (all knits, all rows  & Ribbing (2 knit x2 purl across)

This workshop will  introduce you to Norwegian methods of knitting and purling.  This technique is great for those that have never been able to manage a continental purl (like me).  

What will you learn?

• How to set up the hand and yarn for Norwegian methods
• How to knit and purl using the Norwegian method

Supplies needed:

• Worsted weight yarn 
• US size 8 (5.0) needles
• Knitter's toolbox

Prework?  Yes

• Cast-on 40 stitches. Knit 5 rows in 5 x 5 ribbing (knit 5 purl 5)

Knitting with more than 1 color to create a design can be intimidating.  But not after this class.

What will you learn?

• Intarsia for stockinette & garter knitting
• Picture chart reading
• Joining a new color
• Methods for holding multiple strands of yarn
• Making bobbins (or not)

Supplies Needed:

• 1 main & 2 contrast colors of worsted or dk weight yarn
• Your choice of needles for working in the round.  Size should be appropriate to the yarn 
• Knitter's Toolbox

• Cast-on 36 sts, and knit 2 rows

Fair isle and intarsia not your thing?  Ended up with a missed, wrong or broken stitch?  

What will you learn?

• Learn duplicate stitch to create personalized knits 
• Repair your knitted fabrics

• High contrast yarn (to your swatch) in aran or chunky weight yarn

• Cast-on 50 stitches and knit for 6"  in stockinette stitch using light-colored worsted or aran weight yarn

Garter Stitch projects are all the rage.  Most of these new projects use short row techniques.and I-cord edges.  Let's channel some Stephen West together. 

 What will you learn?  

• What is it?
• What are the 5 types?
• Learn the German short row knit & purl
• Let's learn the Japanese short rows 

Supplies:

• Any DK weight yarn in a light color (non-variegated please)
• 10 Locking stitch markers
• Knitter's toolbox

• Cast-on 60 stitches and knit 2 rows.

Want your sock stripes and heels to match perfectly?  

What will you learn?

• The difference between an afterthought and a forethought heel
• The steps to create these heels

Materials :

• Light colored Worsted or DK  as main color and high contrast yarn in same weight 
• Waste yarn that is smooth and a high contrast to the main color
• Tapestry needle (same thickness as yarn)

• Knit 1 -  4" tube (in the round) cast-off
• Knit 1 - 2"  tube (in the round) keep on needles

Learn 5 ways to create jogless joins

What will you learn?

• Learn 5 ways to manage the jog 

Materials Needed:

• Worsted, Aran or Chunky weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors
• 16" Circular knitting needle or
  DPN's appropriate to the weight yarn
• Stitch marker 
• Knitting notions kit
